MediaPost: Both Playboy and Rolling Stone magazines are using a sophisticated HTML5 platform to bring their full back-issue archives to tablet and Web users. Avoiding the content restrictions and the limited access to subscriber data in Apple’s App Store, the Web-based approach allows the two brands to go direct to consumers with these offerings, yet retain an app-like functionality. Their technology provider Bondi Digital has now released the HTML5 platform for wider use and is developing its capabilities for a wider selection of Web browsers and devices.

HTML5 can give digital magazine archives the look and feel of a dedicated tablet app, but within a browser. Playboy magazine used the model early this summer to launch its full archives for iPad outside the reach of iTune’s nudity-averse censors. But more recently, Rolling Stone magazine also used the platform to put its entire historical run of 1,100 issues in a browser-based iPad-only format.

NEW YORK, NY, November 1st, 2011— Bondi Digital Publishing announced that Playboy and Rolling Stone are the first magazines to adopt its newly released HTML5 iPad viewer. Bondi developed the proprietary touch viewer so that iPad users can browse, search and read every issue of a complete archive directly through the IOS browser. Although browser based, users will find many of the familiar touch gestures of a native app, including pinch zoom and swipe to turn pages.

Subscribers can access each magazine’s current digital edition, plus their entire digital archive. Playboy went live on the iPad in late June with over 650 issues and charges $8 per month and $60 for a one year subscription. According to Jimmy Jellinek, Chief Content Officer at Playboy, “It’s already a resounding success for the company from a commercial standpoint”.

Rolling Stone debuted in August with over 1,100 issues. The content is only available to print subscribers, who can access it for free.

The Bondi Archive Platform is available to publishers as Software as a Service and integrates seamlessly into magazines websites. According to Murat Aktar, Co-Founder at Bondi, “Publishers are understandably excited about how touch enabled tablet devices are transforming the digital magazine reading experience. Bringing access to magazine archives on the iPad is a fantastic new opportunity for traditional magazines.

LAS VEGAS, MICROSOFT MIX’09 SHOW March 18, 2009 — Playboy Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE: PLA, PLAA) and Bondi Digital Publishing LLC, today went live with the public beta version of www.playboyarchive.com, a website where web viewers can instantly view a collection of digital back issues of Playboy Maga- zine from each of the years 1954 through 2007 without charge.

In a first for Playboy, readers and fans will be able to go online and instantly browse, search and read a compilation of perfect digital back issues of the magazine, many of which are highly sought-after collectors’ items. Each digital issue in the web archive will appear exactly as it did – including advertise- ments – in the original print edition of Playboy.

“Playboy has an incredibly rich history and an intensely loyal readership,” says Hugh M. Hefner, Playboy Founder, Editor-in-Chief and Chief Creative Officer. “This is the perfect opportunity to offer them something they have always wanted and also a great way to allow a whole new generation to easily explore the magazine.”

The system loads magazines quickly and users are finding it very easy to navigate.“We are impressed with the way Bondi’s digital publishing web platform presents the digital editions – it’s fast and easy to use. And the resolu- tion Bondi was able to get makes the reading experience enjoyable,” said Leopold Froehlich, Executive Editor.

To bring Playboy to life digitally, Bondi Digital Publishing – the software pioneers that developed the platform for The Complete New Yorker – scanned and re-typed each issue of Playboy. David Anthony, Co-Founder of Bondi noted: “Playboy has been an exceptionally influential part of America’s cultural land- scape for more than 50 years. We are thrilled to give people a whole new way to explore that history.” That sentiment was echoed by Murat Aktar, co-founder of Bondi Digital Pub- lishing who agreed and added:“It has been a five-year effort to get our system onto the Internet, so it is exciting to be getting such positive response from users on the new web platform.”

The web component of Bondi’s online digital publishing platform was created with the help of super-development house and Microsoft Partner of the Year award winner, Vertigo. The platform offers an end-to-end system for publishing and monetizing back archives of magazines on the web. It was launched and showcased during Microsoft’s Mix developers conference in Las Vegas today, and makes extensive use of Microsoft’s rich media technology: Silverlight.

About Bondi Digital Publishing

Bondi Digital Publishing has extensive experience helping magazine publish- ers create commercial opportunities from their print archives. Bondi has devel- oped both online and offline software platforms for organizing and viewing vast collections of magazines. Individual issues are presented on our system as exact digital replicas of the print release with all of the rich formatting intact. In addition to being a familiar experience to readers, this allows magazines to release back issues under the original copyright.

Founded in 2004, Bondi set the standard for user-friendly, searchable digital magazine archives when The New Yorker selected the company to develop the software platform behind the Complete New Yorker, an eight DVD-ROM set containing almost 500,000 print pages. In 2007, Bondi published digital archives of the first 40 years of Rolling Stone magazine and it began releasing the complete run of Playboy magazine.
